Doug Smith (a.k.a. DJ Smitty D) has been a fixture in the global house music scene for more than 30 years. As one half of pioneering house duo 95 North Productions, Smitty D has written, produced and remixed numerous dance music recordings that have received worldwide acclaim.

The 95 North Productions sound was born in 1991 on an Ensoniq 16-Plus keyboard and first found its way to wax on the legendary NYC record label Strictly Rhythm in 1992 under the pseudonym Scram in the form of the tracks “Thank You” and “Off The Beaten Track.” The success of their first release led to several additional releases on Strictly Rhythm, including two EPs under the Groove Patrol pseudonym, and the song “Shattered Love” by singer/actress Brenda Braxton. The duo eventually adopted the name 95 North Productions (a nod to their frequent travels on I-95 North to NYC to shop music) and began blazing through the New York house music scene with releases on Emotive Records, Shelter Records, Kult Records, Henry Street Records, 4th Floor Records, Groove On Records, King Street Sounds, and more.

Their first major success occurred with the release of the classic single “Hold On” by Sabrynaah Pope on King Street Sounds in 1994 (supported and remixed by Louie Vega). The immediate follow up— a rendition of Earth, Wind & Fire's “See the Light” on NYC label Choice Records—became an underground classic, as did their piano-laden instrumental track “The Journey” on Shelter Records, which has the distinction of being the first record ever remixed by legendary Body & Soul resident, Joe Claussell.

Thanks to many of their early champions—including Sam “The Man” Burns, DJ Mandrill, Geoffrey C, DJ Oji, DJ Pope, DJ Spen, Tony Humphries, the late John Robinson, DJ Disciple, DJ Dove, Roger S., Little "Louie" Vega, and many others—their sound eventually travelled overseas, which led to DJ gigs all over Europe, including at the late Paul “Trouble” Anderson’s infamous Sunday night industry party, the Ministry of Sound in London, and Angels of Love in Italy. The combination of keyboards being playing over a live DJ set proved to be a hit everywhere they played. Smitty D also established two long held bi-weekly residencies in Washington, D.C.: one at the legendary Club Red (1996-2003), and the other at The Sanctuary at Vicki's (1999-2003).

Their musical success also led to a number of remix offers for artists ranging from from Jody Watley to George Duke to Crystal Waters to Kathy Sledge to Dru Hill. In 1994, they were commissioned by The Basement Boys to write “What I Need” for Crystal Waters’ second album, and eventually co-wrote and produced three songs for Crystal Waters' third album on Mercury Records. Their 1997 collaboration with Crystal Waters titled “Just a Freak” became the theme song for the major motion picture "Double Team" starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman.

Describing the 95 North Productions “sound” is sometimes difficult as the duo has blazed the dance music world with an array of stylistically varied classic dance tracks, ranging from the full-on gospel brilliance of “Alright” by Mijan, to the loopy underground classic vibe of “Who's Hoo” on Henry Street, to the off-kilter “Odyssey” on Groove On Records, to the way-ahead-of-its-time “Elevation” on Large Records, to their 1995 classic “Let Yourself Go” on Kult Records, which is considered by many in the UK to be one of the foundational records of the UK Garage movement.

95 North Productions finally received a taste of mainstream success in Europe with the release of their biggest single "Sunday Shoutin'" on 4th Floor/Defected Records, done under their Johnny Corporate pseudonym. Widely viewed as one of the top songs of the 2000 Winter Music Conference, “Sunday Shoutin’” was supported by everyone from Pete Tong to Louie Vega to Tony Humphries to David Morales to Roger S. and beyond, "Sunday Shoutin'" remained a dance floor staple for the better part of a year and went on make it to the number 45 position on the pop charts in the UK. It is still in rotation in top clubs around the world and has been sampled numerous times, most recently by Mark Knight for his chart topping 2020 dance hit “All 4 Love” on Toolroom Records.

A longtime fixture of Detroit’s club scene, DJ Minx is often referred to as the First Lady of Wax.Her mix sets as well as her productions range from deep and minimal to boisterous and funky, and she’s earned respect throughout the techno and house scenes. Active as a DJ since the early 1990s, she formed the Women on Wax collective and label, and started releasing tracks in the early 2000s, scoring an underground hit with the 2003 minimal house track “A Walk in the Park.” She continued honing her craft over the years and began receiving more widespread recognition during the 2010s, as her international bookings increased and she released further singles, like 2022’s “Do It All Night.”

Jennifer Damaris was born in Detroit in 1967. She began to DJ after a friend took her to see Derrick May spin at a club called the Music Institute in 1989. As DJ Minx, she started playing sets at another Detroit club, the Loft, and other parties in the city. She became close friends with Kevin Saunderson during the mid-’90s, and he gave her some guidance and encouraged her to develop her own style. Minx hosted a program called Deep Space Radio on Detroit station WGPR, and she provided voice overs on Saunderson’s X-Mix: Transmission from Deep Space Radio, a 1997 mix CD modeled after the show. Minx hosted another show called Steamy

Windows on CJAM, broadcasting from the University of Windsor, and she became a resident DJ at Club Motor in Hamtramck, Michigan, where she opened for established DJs from Detroit and abroad. She performed at the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000 and continued to play the festival annually, including its subsequent iterations as Movement and Fuse-In.

Minx formed Women on Wax, a collective of female DJs and producers from the Detroit area, in late 1996, and she launched the label Women on Wax Recordings in 2001. Her debut EP, Introduction, was released as a white-label 12″ that year, and it was followed by Airborne in 2003. One of the record’s tracks, “A Walk in the Park,” became a hit among minimal techno DJs, and Richie Hawtin re-released it on his M_nus imprint, with remixes by producers like Ricardo Villalobos and Matthew Dear. Minx released the EP Fuzzy Navel in 2004 and collaborated with fellow Detroit house producer Pirahnahead as Animal Trax. Minx’s Midnite Bullet EP appeared

in 2008, and she made a brief appearance on Andrés’ 2009 album II.

More than two decades after she began her career in the club scene, DJ Minx finally started receiving recognition as a dance music legend during the 2010s. In 2015, Mixmag named her as one of the 20 women who shaped the history of dance music, and Time Out New York included her in a list of the Top Ten house DJs of all time in 2016. She was awarded the Spirit of Detroit award by the city council in 2018, along with Stacey Hotwaxx Hale, Underground Resistance’s Bridgette Banks, and other women who played a major role in Detroit’s dance scene. Minx left her job in the Detroit auto industry and pursued music full-time. She released several singles and EPs during the early 2020s, including Violet Groove, which featured an updated version of “A Walk in the Park.”

Minx came out as a lesbian in 2021, during Pride Month. Soon after, her image was featured in a mural on the side of Detroit’s Ruth Ellis Center dedicated to the city’s queer community, and her single “Purse First ” was released, with proceeds benefiting the LGBTQ+ community center. She also released an EP titled Queendom on London-based HE.SHE.THEY. and shared a split EP with another veteran Detroit producer, Gari Romalis. In 2022, Minx made her first appearance on BBC Radio 1’s long-running Essential Mix. Her song “Do It All Night,” previously featured on Carl Craig’s 2019 mix Detroit Love, Vol. 2, was given a full release on Planet E, with remixes by Craig and Honey Dijon. Minx continued playing at clubs and festivals around the world, and she was asked to curate her own stage at the 2022 edition of Movement.

Kitty Amor:

The UK’s foremost ambassador for African-influenced electronic music, Kitty Amoris cultivating an impeccable legacy. An accomplished DJ, producer, sonic storyteller, label owner and advocate for underrepresented communities, her dedication to the afro sound is unwavering. Kitty’s a leader in pushing the sound into unfamiliar spaces with huge international debuts last year including, Glastonbury Festival, Voodoo Village, CORE Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival & ANTS Ibiza. 2025 is set to be on of her biggest years so far.

Production-wise, Kitty has demonstrated her natural musicality with a series of well-received singles and remixes, including the huge rework of Dennis Ferrer’s ‘Hey Hey’ with Da Capo, and a pinch-yourself-moment remix of London Grammar’s ‘Into Gold’. A lifelong digger, she has channelled her deep knowledge and appreciation of afro sounds into a highly-regarded record label, Mahaba Music, using her growing stature to champion a variety of artists from the Motherland and beyond. With a clear focus on what she wants to achieve and an ever-growing global following, Kitty continues to flourish professionally, creatively and personally.

Kitty’s latest single ‘The Answer’ (with AWEN) is indicative of her progressive outlook. A commentary on the tide turning towards women who DJ, it’s a call for genuine equality and solidarity, over mindless box ticking. As always, empowerment is at the core of Kitty’s messaging. The single is the first from an extended project, which is still in development and promises to be an exceptional body of work when it lands in 2025. Combining pulsating bass, captivating rhythms, rousing atmospherics and AWEN’s heartfelt vocals, ‘The Answer’ further solidifies Kitty’s prowess as a producer - a natural extension of her artistry as a selector.

Since she first stepped into the world of DJing in 2009, Kitty’s passion and love for African sounds have been central to her growth and evolution as an artist. Surrounded by esoteric music in her youth (her dad was a sound engineer for afrobeat music collectives), Kitty’s childhood grounding permeates into her spellbinding sets today. Drawing on those formative influences, she conjures up the mystical power of her own heritage and the lineage that emanates from the Motherland. Deep hypnotic basslines, spiritual chants, soulful vocals, uplifting melodies and tribal rhythms captivate audiences new and old with every performance. In London, during the 2010s, she cultivated a tight-knit community around her parties Sessions and Motherland. Motherland was featured in Mixmag in 2019 and the following year Kitty became one of the magazine’s cover stars, launching her onto the world stage.

Since that pivotal moment, all the years of tireless work and commitment to the afro sound have been the catalyst behind a long list of career-defining achievements: the first female afro house DJ to play Glastonbury in 2023, a brand partnership with Nike, a show-stopping appearance at Hi Ibiza with Vintage Culture and Fisher, a residency on Rinse FM, the launch of Mahaba Music, a 30-date World Tour and her incredibly personal and vulnerable documentary “Who Is Kitty Amor?” (which was picked up by the prestigious Iris Prize Festival). Kitty has been championed by some of the world’s most influential tastemakers including Benji B, Tiffany Calver, Pete Tong, Arielle Free, Fraser T Smith and Afrodeutsche. She has recorded sets for BBC Radio 1, Mixmag Lab, DJ Mag HQ, Triple J, Apple Music and Resident Advisor, alongside a live set on Channel O, a national television station in South Africa - the nation that has been intrinsic to her artistic development. Kitty’s connection to South Africa runs deeper than words can express. At the heart of her sound is the vibration of SA and its vibrant culture, combined with the energy of her hometown, London and, of course, the rest of Africa.

Representing the music from across the continent and her city, while also becoming a figure of inspiration for black and queer women, puts Kitty in an influential position and she takes the responsibility very seriously. Her desire to inspire, lead and platform others demonstrates an element of selflessness that is both admirable and vital. This can be seen in the signings to her label, Mahaba, launched in conjunction with electronic music powerhouse, Defected, the music she plays in her sets and her public advocacy of underrepresented artists, labels and nations. It’s her life’s mission; to showcase and promote inclusivity while empowering those who are often excluded from electronic music spaces. Cross-pollination is a key part of this mission; introducing the afro sound to unexplored dance floors and club spaces across the globe. Her appearance at Fisher’s party at Hi Ibiza, for instance, or performing alongside SG Lewis in New York and Eats Everything’s History Of Rave party at the Stonebridge tent at Glastonbury. It’s about taking the sound to people who may not be familiar, with positive reactions every time, which helps to grow the global following.

At every step of her journey so far, Kitty has honoured her African heritage. This can be heard permeating through her sets, which many observers comment have a unique vibe, distinct to Kitty herself and her curating skills. It’s also evident throughout her discography, since her debut on Get Physical - ‘Khoisan’, a collaboration with Thakzin through to the stunning ‘I Saw An Angel’, which was another massive milestone for Kitty. The track, written alongside the Nigerian singer-songwriter Somadina, received a major-label release via Warner Music Africa and Parlophone Europe. Her debut solo release, also marked the debut of her label Mahaba Music. ‘Solitude’ was a collaboration with the vocalist Nathan Nicholson, and it marked a big step in Kitty’s creative development. Perhaps highest on Kitty’s own list of production achievements is her remix of the iconic ‘Hey Hey’ by Dennis Ferrer. Produced with close friend Da Capo for Defected’s 25th anniversary celebrations, the track has a special place in her heart, thanks to its anthemic status for London’s clubbing community, in particular. Playing back-to-back with Da Capo at Ultra Festival in South Africa, and being able to play the remix there, kicked off Kitty’s epic 2024 in style.

Touring the world is now a regular occurrence for Kitty. Her tour diary is packed with high-profile gigs, giving her the perfect platform to showcase the afro sound to new audiences. Her ever growing list of standout performances includes appearances at Skepta and Jammer’s Mas Tiempo events and sets at Printworks, Hï Ibiza, Ushuaia, KOKO, Fabric, Tresor, Watergate and The Warehouse Project, through to festival appearances at Glastonbury, Voodoo Village, Big Smoke Festival, Lost Village, TRIIP Festival, Exit Festival, Tomorrowland CORE Defected Malta and Ultra South Africa in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Going back 15 years to the very start, it’s always been clear to Kitty that telling her story is paramount. Through sharing her own narrative, she is ensuring that representation of her sound, heritage, community, gender and sexuality is at the centre of her mission. A savvy, humble, highly creative and driven artist, Kitty is a powerful force for progression, steadily revolutionising the global electronic music scene with her visionary outlook. As her status continues to grow, and her natural talent flourishes, she’s bringing everyone up with her. Through her conscious and intentional action Kitty Amor is establishing a legacy rooted in love, positive social change, empowerment and an unwavering determination to spread the profound energy of the Motherland, Africa.

We're celebrating Elliott & Jon Jar’s birthdays for this edition of Local Love <3

——————

Elliott

From hip hop to hippie to straight up house head, Elliott’s life has always revolved around listening to, learning about, digging for and experiencing music. For nearly 15 years, that energy has been pumped into dance music starting in the blog house era and evolving from there to a more open-format style that defined his pre-pandemic BUTTER parties. Since the lockdown of 2020, his journey has led him deeper into the sound of the underground, drawing inspiration from legends like Honey Dijon, Kerri Chandler, Moodymann, and Classic Music Co. label co-founder Luke Solomon. This very journey has led him to collaborating with restaurateur & LOSO club creator Brandon Pearson since 2021, as well as opening for and sharing booths with the likes of DJ Minx, DJ Holographic, Kim Ann Foxman and HoneyLuv.

——————

Jon Jar

Jon Jar is known for his high-energy, house and techno mixes that blur the lines between genres. As a Richmond-native, Jon has been hypnotizing RVA's dance floors with his unique blends of high-bpm techno, house, and hardgroove weapons. He's played alongside artists including Ardalan, Kyle Walker, Shiba San, Lubelski, Morgan Page, Le Youth, and SNBRN. In 2018, Jon co-founded the collective 4 ON THE FLOOR to bring more house music to Richmond's scene; curating nights that showcased the best local talent and fostering a community of like-minded house enthusiasts.

——————

David Goza is a seasoned DJ with 10+ years of experience, known for seamlessly blending genres like tech house, minimal/deep tech, Latin house, techno, and breaks into a cohesive and dynamic sound. His sets are a journey through driving basslines, hypnotic rhythms, vibrant percussive beats, and eclectic breaks, all intertwined to create a unique and unforgettable dance floor experience. David’s passion is curating safe, inclusive spaces where people can lose themselves in the music and dance with complete freedom.

——————

Xav's musical style can be summarized as one word, emotional. First exposed to the dance and DJ community in 2018, by 2019 he co-founded the EDM group Bass Trinity. Once truly learning the differences in styles and most importantly origins of dance music, his focus shifted towards house and techno exclusively. Since then he has played across numerous clubs and venues in the Mid Atlantic. Currently when he's not working on production or expanding the dance community in his hometown of Richmond Virginia, he acts as the East Coast & Richmond liaison for the prestigious Black Techno Matters while also getting ready for the launch of his melodic techno centric brand/label Ariose Agenda.

------------

DJ Holographic is a funky force of joy. She is a leading woman of the next generation of the Detroit dance music underground, and brings that potent energy with her wherever she goes.

The DJ/producer was born-and-raised in Detroit on a rich musical diet of Motown, R&B, Rock, and House. Born Ariel Corley, her artist name was inspired by Star Trek’s Holodeck, a mirror to society, a manifestation of human divineness, and a transporter of different realities into different spaces. She brings intention to everything she does, and when she steps behind the decks you feel her unconditional love as she channels the energy of the crowd and the seasons, curating a soundtrack of house, funk, nu-disco, techno and beyond to suit and elevate the vibe.

Corley has filled many a hallowed space with her resonant sound over the past 13 years. Since cutting her teeth in the certified underground of Detroit’s warehouses, she’s played four Movements, along with enviable bookings at other beloved clubs and festivals around the world, from Tomorrowland to OFFSónar. 2022 was a banner year with many firsts, including a successful Australian tour and Coachella debut. Swedish House Mafia offered her to open seven of their stadium shows, and she toured North America and Europe several times over. She’s a regular DJ at Berlin’s famed Panorama Bar and played their 2023 New Year’s Eve party, clocking in four shows there in 2022.

The love, intimacy and realness she brings to her shows has won her a diverse, devoted fanbase across the globe, and this connection is what ignites and fuels her. “I enjoy being able to interact with my crowd musically and emotionally,” she explains. Her upbeat sound and boundless joy can fill any space, and she feels most at home in intimate spaces akin to Detroit warehouse parties. She celebrates the culture she’s building together with her audience and fellow like-hearted DJs, a continuation of techno’s Detroit origins.

Techno forefather Carl Craig tapped her to curate Detroit Love Vol. 5 in 2021, the compilation album series on his iconic independent label Planet E Communications. The album is a vibey celebration of Detroit-based and Detroit-loving artists, and a sampling of the type of tunesCorley might listen to on the journey before, during and after a show. It got a nod from DJ Magfor 2022 Best Compilation and came with a vibrant, classic house-nodding DJ Holographic original, “Faith in My Cup,” featuring Apropos’ warm vocals. Her first release came in 2020, a playful, funky three-track EP donning her filtered voice, Parallel Shifting.

Corley’s been working on new music and is excited to share it in 2023. She’s been clearing space for unbridled creativity, to find the depth of her voice and sound as a producer. She’s been taking voice lessons and found the instrument she most connects with, an Akai MPC. Like music, she’s found solace in astrology, using it as a tool for healing and to discover all facets of herself. She’s surprised by some of the darker sounds she’s been making, ala early GreenVelvet, and feels it could be from her Scorpio rising. Her sun sign is Sagittarius, the free-spirited adventurer and intellectual, quite fitting for a globe-trotting DJ well-studied in music, community building and anthropology. The time to enter the world of DJ Holographic—a joyfully soundtracked, ever-expanding, creative, heart-centered glittering disco ball of possibility—is now.

Carmen Johnson is an active DJ, singer, promoter and actress born in Detroit who performs under the name sillygirlcarmen. She’s played in many exclusive settings around the world. From Detroit to LA, NYC to Miami, Montreal to Paris. Playing at venues such as, Flash DC, Silo NYC, Djoon Paris, TV Lounge Detroit and Public Works San Francisco. And festivals such as Charivari Detroit, Movement, West Coast Weekender, MTL 24, Big Stomp and Miami Music Week.

Carmen is known to craft passionate sets that energize the room and ignite the dance floor. Highly requested, she has played alongside industry favorites such as Louie Vega, Moodymann, MK, Nora En Pure, DJ Minx, Rich Medina, Delano Smith, Will Clarke, Eats Everything, Gene Farris, Green Velvet and Osunlade. She is now focused on her production and original music releases from Nervous Records, Popgang Records, Soul Clap Records and her brand new label Sun & Sound Detroit. House Legends Karizma, Glenn Underground, and DJ Minx among others, have already crafted one of a kind remixes with her original works. Carmen is 100% passionate about music, arts, and all things involving creative expansion.

Sillygirlcarmen is a newgen idealist when shaping her sets. Her approach is unmarred by purists’ notions of what device or technology makes the DJ. Hers is a focused appreciation of the music, and its delivery in the mix, with the goal of making the audience center stage. It is the people on the dance floor and their connection with the track selections that will create the memory of the night. Your brand flourishes delivering these good times, and those present will tell the stories.

In a world where technology appears to make it possible that “anybody can be a DJ now” and at a time when everything musically is available to everyone, you must find your niche and something that sets you apart from your contemporaries. Just like each generation of DJs before, new DJs are brimming with fresh ideas and a unique perspective. As one of the newest members of the Detroit DJ legacy taking her seat at the table, Sillygirlcarmen is a glimpse of where the DJ world could be. She brings a multifarious Artistic approach to her direction as DJ/Producer/Graphic Artist/Actress/Model. Instead of likes and followers, the goal is authenticity and connection.

Sillygirlcarmen is uncompromising in her journey with the music and its history. She has youthful insistence and a voracious drive for consistent discovery of old music to present in the context of a contemporary mix while also keeping her finger on the pulse of new music. Each set that she delivers is more about the collective and experiential rather than the individual delivering. Detroit born sillygirlcarmen aka Carmen Johnson is the daughter of Todd Johnson, an early pioneer DJ and promoter of Detroit dance music culture and one of the principles of the annual Charivari Detroit Music Festival. Her childhood was filled with full access to mixed CDs from the best of Detroit and many Detroit legends (Delano Smith, DWynn, Terrence Parker, Eddie Fowlkes and others are decades long family friends.)

Sillygirlcarmen passionately embraces the culture. A sillygirlcarmen set doesn’t flow with intent; it could be better described as unfolding more in reaction to her feeling in the moment. In these moments, is where her groove becomes more deliberate over time, more urgent, and sometimes intense while progressing. She makes selections to respond to the crowds movement as needed, at times sonically alluring and ambiguous, and other times absolutely in your face. The collision of DJ, music, and craft sparks a mesmerizing energy in her dance floors. She is always focused on the process while never losing sight of keeping the communication clear with those in motion. She delivers the soundtrack for the experience that you came to hear. Sillygirlcarmen is one of the new DJs of this generation with a message that the legacy of this culture is in good hands to all those who care to listen. Sillygirl “ I’m looking forward to playing more, creating more, being a part of more. I’m so grateful for the chance to share my expression thru music and shared spaces. These are the most ideal moments for enjoying life.”

The future will see the scene shift and current and new Artists will musically lead the way. That process cannot be routine or always traditional, but more thoughtful about the different ways that this music and events can be presented. It will require a more inclusive approach along with leadership, partnership and community. DJ culture is an artistic route of creative music delivery that has strong collective histories and memories; but it’s also the path into new extraordinary articulations of music, dance floor magic and community possibility. Sillygirlcarmen is out there grinding and banging to be part of making the destination possible and audibly pleasing. And there is nothing silly about that.

NADIA

After realizing that every hard time in her life was resolved by getting in the car & blasting music, Nadia decided she’d make music a part of her life forever. Those car rides always reminded Nadia how powerful she is, and now her goal is to return that feeling back in her music & sets.

Since the day Nadia bought her fi rst mixer, her goals have remained the same, “Create timeless music that will forever evoke dancing, feeling free & letting go.” Boxes aren’t real and curating an atmosphere with tasteful & diverse music is her main concern.

Starting her music journey 3 years ago, Nadia has had the opportunity to play at Project Glow & Elements Festival and support acts such as Fisher, Habibeats, Odd Mob, Tony Romera, Shiba San, CID, It’s Murph, Gudfella, Nostalgix, and several other artists.

Junior Sanchez

JUNIOR SANCHEZ @ LOSO
w/ Elliott
Saturday, July 12
Doors: 8pm
DJ Sets: 9pm - 2am
2727 W. Broad St
21+

As one of the world’s most respected and innovative DJs, Junior Sanchez has remained at the forefront of house music since the ‘90s. But throughout his three-decade-long career, Sanchez has continued to challenge himself—becoming a versatile producer, a hands-on label executive, and an inspiring entrepreneur along the way. Above all, Sanchez’s enthusiasm for his craft, and his passion to share it with others, is present in all of his endeavors.

Although Sanchez’s story begins in the most ordinary of places—suburban New Jersey—his rise to fame was anything but. The youngest of six, Sanchez was raised on his family’s diverse record collection. While his Brazilian mother enjoyed a steady dose of Latin music, his siblings each had their own favorites: from ELO and Fleetwood Mac to Slick Rick and The Smiths. Sanchez embraced it all. But when he discovered house music—a relatively young genre that sprung from the ashes of disco—it resonated with him on a new level.

Sanchez developed his talents on a makeshift rig at home and immersed himself in New York City’s vibrant club scene. By his early teens, he was DJing regularly at Peter Gatien’s Club USA and Limelight. Balancing high school with residencies, Sanchez signed his first record deal at 15. A few years later, he established Cube Recordings, where he released records from the likes of Rhythm Masters, Stuart Price, and Sébastien Léger. There, he also co-produced Felix da Housecat’s landmark electroclash album, Kittenz and Thee Glitz.

The prodigious DJ not only won the respect of house music’s elders but also of a new generation of stars, including Armand van Helden, who took Sanchez under his wing. Together, they founded Da Mongaloids—a global collective of DJs that featured such high-profile names as Todd Terry; Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christ; Roger Sanchez; Laidback Luke; DJ Sneak; and Basement Jaxx’s Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe. Aiming to create “The Wu-Tang Clan of House Music,” Sanchez was the youngest of the group—and the most enthusiastic. “I recruited all of these people,” he recalls. “We started re-mixing each other and appearing on each other’s records. There was a lot of unity.”

The collective also birthed a project between Sanchez, DJ Sneak, and Roger Sanchez called The S-Men. The multi-generational trio put together an enthralling live act featuring six turntables, a sampler, and a keyboard. While turntablism of this level had been seen in hip-hop, it was revolutionary in the world of house music. The S-Men made their debut at London’s 1997 Tribal Gathering, opening for Kraftwerk. A little over two decades later, the group thrilled fans with a reunion. Today, they continue to work together.

Da Mongaloids, meanwhile, never officially parted ways, but members became increasingly busy with their exploding careers. Sanchez was no exception.

Over the years, the New York-based artist has enjoyed regular club appearances in Ibiza, Las Vegas, and Miami, and played for thousands of fans at Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, Winter Music Conference, and Amsterdam Dance Event. He has also released dozens of singles and EPs across such esteemed labels as Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, and Defected, plus two full-length albums: 2011’s Seize the Fewcha and 2017’s Under the Influence. The latter title, which pays homage to house music’s pioneers, was released under Sanchez’s Brobot Records.

Established in 2013 in partnership with Steve Angello’s Size Records, Brobot offered Sanchez the freedom to release his own records, as well as more experimental music from his peers. Additionally, the label gave him an opportunity to mentor and showcase a variety of rising, young talent.

Early on, Sanchez also pursued a career as a producer, remixer, and songwriter, which allowed him to work with a broad spectrum of artists. “Dance music is such a huge part of my musical DNA, but there’s so much more to me too,” he shares. “When I began making house music, I did it because I loved it—but I never turned my back on other types of music.”

Those sessions helped him grow exponentially as an artist. “I wanted to put myself out there and learn how to work with a band or a singer-songwriter. I had to do that in order to be better at what I do,” says Sanchez, whose roster of collaborators includes Madonna, Ariana Grande, Good Charlotte, Katy Perry, A Tribe Called Quest, Ima Robot, Morningwood, Teyana Taylor, and Azealia Banks, with whom he co-wrote and produced the highly-acclaimed viral hit, “Anna Wintour.”

That endless love of learning sparked one of Sanchez’s newest projects, KULTUR: a label, events, and lifestyle brand with an educational focus. Co-founded in 2020 with the Toronto-based DJ and producer Demiur, KULTUR was created to “keep the narrative of house music alive, so that kids know where their favorite dance music came from,” explains Sanchez.

Those origins began in the underground—and particularly the marginalized communities—of American cities. “House music will always have its roots within the Black, Latinx, straight, and LGBTQ+ cultures of New York and Chicago,” notes Sanchez. “It came from people who needed to escape their daily lives.” Sanchez is further exploring these foundational themes in an upcoming solo project, which is currently in the works with producer Dallas Austin.

Today, Sanchez feels a responsibility to preserve that original spirit while also looking ahead; empowering a new generation of artists to shape the future of dance music. “Everyone should win within this culture—whether they’re underground or mainstream; a singer, a songwriter, or a DJ who makes beats. There’s room for everyone.”

It’s certainly a full-circle moment for the busy artist and father as he enters the next decade of his career. “I always say that we’re all pixels in this amazing story of house music; we’ve all played a role,” he reflects. “I’m so grateful that I was part of the picture as a kid—and am still a part of this ‘painting’ that we’re all creating.”

------------

For nearly two decades, Evan Baggs has been breaking boundaries with an expansive sound on the outer edges of house and techno. The vibe is equal parts Berlin, his home since 2007, and his hometown of New York, where a diverse underground scene first inspired his unique approach to DJing and music making.

Meanwhile, his own studio productions have been released on the labels of like-minded global selectors Francesco Del Garda, Binh, and DJ Masda, among others.

Focused more on the music than the spotlight, Evan’s sustained and organic rise has earned him a loyal following amongst both discerning crowds and fellow DJs. ANDI @ LOSO
w/ Stiffdance
Saturday, June 28
Doors: 8pm
DJ Sets: 9pm - 2am
2727 W. Broad St

Electric is the only way to describe Andi’s sets. The NYC-based DJ and producer constructs a dynamic and intoxicating flow that’s always palpable between the walls of the foggy, neon-lit dancefloor. Parts sleaze and sultry, Andi’s aesthetic is body music based, thriving on the delivery of the groove and the bombastic highs of a track’s apex. As a devotee of distinct sounds such as EBM, new beat, Italo, and freestyle—with hints of housey 90s elements—her sets reflect her deep vinyl collection: diverse, yet focused, and completely one-of-a-kind. She has most recently been called upon to DJ at Panorama Bar, Montreux Jazz Festival, Fold London, and Ombra Festival.

Her own productions aim to challenge the expectations within the confines of traditionally masculine dance genres. With bassline-heavy grooves and a conceptual emphasis on storytelling with samples taken from long-forgotten erotic thrillers and seedy sci-fi films, Andi adds a wry yet delicate touch to machine music.

Andi released Corpse to Corpus in 2020 and Compelling Evidence in 2023 on aufnahme + wiedergabe, as well as the Torque Force split EP with Randolph & Mortimer on Mecanica Records in 2021. Additionally, her collaborative electro-industrial project, Andi + Machino, released the Parafernales EP on Mannequin Records in 2023, and her track with Randolph & Mortimer is featured on Curses’ Next Wave Acid Punx Deux compilation. Most recently, she contributed a track to Dischi Autunno's Intermezzo Tre compilation with the track "End Program” and Next Wave Acid Punx Revamps with an edit of Philadelphia Five’s “Not Leaving Without Jerry.”

As the boss of SYNTHICIDE—the internationally known party, label and event series—Andi has cultivated the dark underground scene for over a decade in Brooklyn. SYNTHICIDE started at the notorious club in Bushwick, Bossa Nova Civic Club, where the party still holds a monthly residency. Additionally, Andi is a resident at The Lot Radio, NYC’s new hot spot Gabriela, and is a member of the ItaloMatic crew.

Liber8 US 2025: RESIST THE ALGORITHM

The year is 2025. Once intended to be open and free, the Internet is now controlled by ultra-rich Tech Bros exploiting a massive data explosion. Scouring information from smartphones, social media, e-commerce, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to feed their mysterious AI-powered algorithms that feed humanity an infinite scroll of stimulating content and addictive convenience.

Stuck in a feedback loop, humanity finds itself dependent on tech corporations while also navigating the societal pollution they create: AI-powered propaganda, misinformation, manipulation, echo chambers, filter bubbles, and biased algorithms that perpetuate oppressive imperialist, capitalist and racist ideals.

Resisting one person, group, policy, political party, or government is no longer enough.

One must RESIST THE ALGORITHM in order to find liber8ion…

------------

Afriqua is a musical prodigy whose creativity knows no bounds. His classical training and hip-hop roots fuse together in a way that defies categorization, resulting in dancefloor anthems that are as bold as they are unapologetically sexual.

From the very beginning, Afriqua has been driven to succeed. Piano lessons won by his parents at a synagogue raffle laid the foundation for his musical education, which he quickly supplemented with turntables, MIDI keyboards, and Ableton. By the age of 12, he was already making waves in the industry, becoming the youngest person ever to place in a DMC DJ competition.

Despite his prodigious talent, Afriqua's career hasn't always been smooth sailing. He was expelled from the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London for his rebellious spirit, but this setback only fueled his determination to succeed. Relocating to Berlin, he continued to hone his skills as a DJ, impressing audiences across the city with his eclectic taste and fearless experimentation.

Today, Afriqua is a true force to be reckoned with. His debut LP, Colored, showcases his seamless ability to blend genres, while his self-released singles, such as Always, and hits like "Da Whip," released on Tomorrowland's CORE Records, have solidified his status as a rising star in the industry.

But it's not just his music that sets Afriqua apart. He's also a gifted writer and producer, as evidenced by his five-part video and essay series, Principles of Black Music, which he penned for the Ableton blog. And when it comes to live performances, Afriqua is in a league of his own. From debuting his live show at MUTEK Montreal last year to DJing at Circoloco at DC-10 in Ibiza and Berghain in Berlin, he's graced some of the most iconic club spaces in the world, leaving audiences in awe with his electrifying sets.

Soul Clap

SOUL CLAP @ LOSO
w/ Elliott & Tennishu (of Butcher Brown)
Saturday, June 14
Doors: 8pm
DJ Sets: 9pm - 2am
2727 W. Broad St
21+

Before today there was yesterday and after tomorrow is the future. Lonely C and Bamboozle’s paths were crossed for all time when a Sun Ra light beam sent from Saturn collided with the P-Funk Mothership and sent them tumbling to earth. Now, Soul Clap time travels on a musical spaceship of dopeness…

Charles Levine aka Lonely C and Eli Goldstein aka Bamboozle cut their teeth in Boston during the 90’s rave heyday and quickly learned the power of P.L.U.R., a commitment to PEACE LOVE UNITY & RESPECT in the community, on the dancefloor, and in the DJ booth. They found an early mentor in Caril Mitro at local record shop Vinyl Connection, who taught them that HOUSE WEARS MANY HATS, “the ethos that the music we love comes in many shapes and sizes”. These values have led to a one-of-a-kind take on electronic music that breaks through limitations and genres with a deep commitment to carry on the traditions of our musical foremothers and fathers.

Spreading their wings beyond Boston, Soul Clap found acclaim through a series of edits, remixes and originals on Wolf + Lamb, and became a household name with their mixes of Extravaganza and Bakerman. They performed everywhere from The Marcy Hotel, to DC10, to Trouw, to Panorama Bar, to The Electric Pickle and on their travels discovered that EVERYBODY’S FREAKY UNDERNATURE’S KINGDOM. EFUNK sounds like modern electronic funk and became their calling card, as the title of their first album in 2012, which lead to a collaboration with George Clinton and honorary entry into the P-Funk family. EFUNK remains a bridge between the discerning futurism of underground dance music and the charisma and boldness of the funk.

EFUNK was followed by contributions to legendary mix series: DJ Kicks, Fabric and Watergate, and a second album, SOUL CLAP in 2016. Meanwhile they launched Soul Clap Records (which Mixmag called one of the best disco labels of the last decade), joined forces with Wolf + Lamb to found the CREW LOVE collective, and continued to share the knowledge; teaching courses, leading workshops, speaking on panels and always including forgotten classics in their DJ sets.

By harnessing the past Soul Clap looks to the future. After exploring solo ventures, they come back together with a series of EPs beginning with Run It ft. Baby Bam on Classic Music Company and followed by releases on Soul Clap Records and the newly minted EFUNK label. All leading up to a new Soul Clap album and launch of The Soul Clap Band, whose first incarnation as an eight piece ensemble on the main stage at Movement Detroit was a highlight of 2017. In anticipation, Soul Clap takes their EFUNK party on the road, growing from Detroit, Miami and New York in 2018 and featuring musical legends of the house, funk and rave worlds. Always pushing new boundaries, always traveling through time and space, The Clap is on a mission to change the world one dance floor at a time. Dr. Funkenstein has taught us well: free your mind, and your ass will follow.

LOSO PRESENTS: SPRING BOOGIE PRIDE EDITION | AN ALL-DAY DANCE MUSIC FESTIVAL
FEATURING DJ MINX, BABY WEIGHT, BARONHAWK POITIER, COMMUNITY SERVICE w/ Taa Tuu Swé, Madison Moore, Stiffdance, TT & DJ HYPERCTV
Saturday, June 7
2pm - 2am

Minx’s Midnite Bullet EP appeared in 2008, and she made a brief appearance on Andrés’ 2009 album II.

HERCULES & LOVE AFFAIR @ LOSO
Saturday, May 31
Doors: 8pm
DJ Sets: 9pm - 2am
2727 W Broad St
21+

A true icon of underground dance music, Hercules & Love Affair—helmed by DJ, producer, and visionary Andy Butler—continues to push the boundaries of electronic sound, blending house, disco, and techno with an ever-evolving sonic palette. Best known for the era-defining anthem “Blind,” featuring Anohni and famously remixed by house legend Frankie Knuckles, Butler has built a career that bridges the worlds of club culture, high fashion, and contemporary art. His original compositions have soundtracked the runways of Chanel, Dior, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent, while his DJ sets have electrified dance floors at institutions like Panorama Bar, London’s Fabric, and NYC Downlow.

Now, after a period of focused studio work and curating his new label Cluboff, Butler is set to return to the live stage with Hercules & Love Affair, bringing an invigorated energy to his performances. Cluboff serves as a bold extension of his vision—a label dedicated to showcasing eclectic and innovative dance music inspired by legendary clubs like The Warehouse, The Saint, and Le Palace. Featuring artists from across the globe, the imprint encapsulates the raw spirit, glamour, and hedonism of these iconic spaces.

Deeply influenced by the pioneers of dance music, Butler has always sought out to immerse himself in statement making dance music. From his time in New York inhaling the genius that the city is renowned for- names like Larry Levan, Arthur Russel, Todd Terry, Masters at Work. He has entrenched himself in Chicago’s history- from it’s industrial and acid house legacy- and looked admiringly to the likes of Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Derrick Carter to name a few. The sound of Detroit has been an inspiration from the innovation of Jeff Mills or that classic blend of vocals and techno in Inner City. And his life in Europe has only deepened his love of that continent’s contributions to electronic and experimental music. From Kraftwerk to Yello, England’s LFO and Summer of Love to Belgian New Beat, Butler’s blood runs thick with a passion for electronic music that puts people together and expands minds and connects hearts. This rich lineage informs his latest work, marking a return to the raw, emotive energy that made Hercules & Love Affair a defining force in contemporary dance music.

It’s no surprise then that with an impeccable ear honed by over two decades in nightlife, Butler’s DJ sets traverse deep, propulsive house, hypnotic techno, and euphoric disco. His extensive remix work—reimagining artists from Blondie to Yazoo—further cements his place as a dance music tastemaker. As Hercules & Love Affair returns to the stage, fans can expect an electrifying live experience, fusing Butler’s signature sound with a renewed sense of artistic urgency. Whether a longtime devotee or a new listener, now is the time to witness the next chapter of Hercules & Love Affair.

Live music intertwined with DJ sets all night! Museum District are BACK AT IT and will be performing some of their singles for us with Anneliese on vocals and Jame Moorfield behind the decks + Julian Goddard will be lacing his immense guitar skills atop Elliott’s dope selections.

Museum District is the house disco partnership of Producer, Jame Moorfield, and Singer/Writer, Anneliese. Their fateful meeting in 2015 started with an innocuous Soundcloud message when Moorfield was in search of a vocalist “would you ever make house music?”

An initial in-person meeting turned into an 8 hour soul session of story swaps, music shares, and aspirations of a life defined by music. Anneliese was a solo artist and fronted a rock and roll band playing throughout Richmond and traveling for festival gigs. Moorfield was releasing house tracks with labels such as MadTech, Endless Records, and Underground Audio and DJ’ing throughout Richmond, in Philly, and DC.

Over two years of collaborating on each other’s solo projects their disco darling was born - in The Museum District in Richmond, Virginia. Their first tracks under the project found a disco house home and they continued self releasing singles and EP’s through 2019. Inspired by the classic disco greats of the 70’s and modern acts like L’Imperatrice, Crazy P, Dimitri from Paris, and Life on Planets they DJ B2B and perform their original tracks live. Anneliese is a powerhouse performer and known disco diva; their music’s soul purpose is to get you moving.

The Pandemic brought their momentum to a grind but they’re back in action after a 5 year hiatus with new tracks, the same love for disco and house, and a fierce determination to create joy on the dance floor.
